NORIKO OKAKU

Max Hattler, graduate from Royal College of Art, has shown his experimental animation short films at hundreds of festivals worldwide including Rotterdam, EMAF, Resfest, Annecy Animation Festival and Animafest Zagreb. His films ‘Collision’ and ‘Drift’ won several prizes including the LUX Award for Best Experimental Film and Best Digital Film at London International Animation Festival. Max has made music videos for several bands, and has performed live audio-visuals across Europe, the US and Japan. He has taught animation at Goldsmiths College, London and Volda University College, Norway. Max Hattler divides his time between working independently as an artist in London and Germany, and as a director with animation companies like Storm Studios in Oslo and Autour de Minuit in Paris.
Noriko Okaku graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design with a BA in Fine Art Media, and from the Royal College of Art with an MA Animation. Her first animated film Diametric Artimaid won the Beck’s Futures Student Prize at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts. Since then, she has shown her works internationally at film festivals and exhibitions, including Anifest in the Czech Republic, Tricky Women Festival in Vienna and London Fashion Week. Noriko has directed idents for Japanese music video channel Space Shower TV and for fashion brand Hall Ohara. She has also worked as an animator and illustrator on many projects, including an several music videos for the Japaneese band Kuchiroro. She lives in London and Tokyo.
Max and Noriko first met when studying together at the Royal College of Art. Although their work is very different, there are several parallels in their experimental, semi-narrative, non-dialogue approach to animation. They have collaborated on the film Aanaatt with music by Japanese musician Jemapur, and on tour visuals for British band The Egg. Max and Noriko also perform live audiovisual together.
